Trump Demands Imprisonment of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Deploy in City

Former President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on his platform early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the federal government advances with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite official statistics indicate notable reductions in many offenses, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard members were expected to deploy to the region, with an additional three hundred state military personnel readying for deployment, according to reports. Authorities indicated the troops would not perform police functions but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with state guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Extra barriers was placed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in the city in the past month, sparking demonstrations, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city initiated legal action against the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a court to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also signed an directive on that day prohibiting ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using military forces as "political props" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is attempting to "justify and make acceptable the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law limits the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. However, the president has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a president to dispatch active duty military in states that are failing to put down an insurrection or are defying federal law.

Since starting his second term, the president has dispatched or mentioned sending military units to over ten cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for example, murders were down 31% to 278 through late summer, according to police data.

New survey data published on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
