The moment is optimal to switch Manchester United's formation - the manager insists.

Manchester United players in training
Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team stars to miss the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim argues that altering Man Utd's formation due to media noise would have signaled "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and chose to field an orthodox four-man defense with two central midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this at times became a six-man defensive block in the final stages as his team clung on for a victory - securing just their second shutout of the season.

Although he once notably said that even the highest authority could pressure him to adjust his system, Amorim insists the ability to experiment with different setups has remained part of his plan.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were faring well enough - otherwise it would appear as if he was succumbing to external pressure.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I recognized perhaps I didn't possess the squad to play well in that system, but it was the commencement of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to forge an style. Currently is a separate moment. We lack a full complement of players, and we need be flexible, so they understand the reason we are changing.

"This isn't because of the pressure of journalists, or the faithful.

"When you talk about changing the formation all the time, I cannot make a change because the squad will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I believe that is the downfall for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the moment to adapt.

"We will become a more complete squad because when our full complement of personnel return, we are not planning to employ a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Continue

Having only two wins in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been playing well.

He is, however, operating with a depleted roster, with seven first-team stars already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be urging his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely still be heavily involved, as while most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to carry on offering insight.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's always vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"There are flaws sometimes - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. Even after he recovers, he heads to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the exact timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
