It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
