Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
