At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
